Kuching, Sarawak – UKEC organized Projek Pelita in partnership with Pustaka Negeri Sarawak. The project was a book drive to aid four libraries which were identified by Pustaka Negeri Sarawak as ‘well-used’ but ‘under-equipped’. The project began on the 14th of June and targeted schools, bookstores and the general public. At the end of the one month drive, UKEC had managed to collect 1936 books which widely surpassed the initial target of 800. The project would not have been successful without support from the public and the substantial amount of books that was collected at Kelab Golf Sarawak, The Spring Shopping Mall, Kolej D.P.A.H Abdillah, Lodge School, and Star Bookstore. The books collected were then processed and delivered by the volunteers for the project with assistance of Pustaka Negeri Sarawak. Perpustakaan Community Kampung Buntal, Perpustakaan Community Kampung Santubong, Perpustakaan Desa Kampung Mundai and Perpustakaan Desa Simpok were the four recipients of over 400 books each. The remaining books were delivered to Ana Rais longhouse to equip the reading room there.
UKEC’s chairman, Farquar Haqqani explained that ‘Project Pelita’ was an example of the many initiatives that UKEC has undertaken to instil the spirit of volunteerism amongst youths, particularly its members. It is UKEC’s hope that through volunteerism, our youths will play a more meaningful role in bringing about positive impact to the society. Another reason for Project Pelita is the realisation that education is vital to the kids and youth living in these areas to in order to give them a chance to build a better future for themselves, hence providing them more books to increase their knowledge is essential. Project director, Shahidah Deen urges the public to continue donating books as there are still many libraries in need of books, especially in rural areas. UKEC currently has a book drop box in Kuching’s largest shopping mall, The Spring until mid-August 2011. Hence those wanting to donate books, please head on down there. Your generous contributions will be very much appreciated.
